On Sunday, September 27, 2009, Girl Scout Troop 819, along with their families and friends, completed a planting project at Maddox Park for National Public Lands Day. They received a grant from the Native Plant Society and had some additional funding to purchase native plants. We spent about 3.5 hours removing ivy, planting, watering, and mulching plants while learning about some of the native plants and the soil in the park. Troop 819 were fantastic to work with and we had a lot of fun in the process. The new plants are around the old blue oak by the street near the east edge of the park. We are hoping to work with the Troop and with our Maddox neighbors to complete additional renaturalization projects in the near future, and to continue our "budding" relationship.
2009 marks the 16th year that National Public Lands Day has brought together thousands of volunteers from coast to coast to improve and restore the lands and facilities that Americans use for recreation, education, and just plain enjoyment. Last year over 120,000 Americans participated at sites in all 50 states.
